HMM to Invest $1.617 Billion in Eight Newbuild and Four Resale Container Ships
South Korean shipping company HMM is embarking on a significant fleet expansion plan, aiming to boost its container fleet from 73 vessels to 166 by 2030. This ambitious growth strategy involves the acquisition of 12 new vessels, with an investment totaling approximately $1.617 billion.
HMM’s Investment Plans and Fleet Expansion
HMM recently revealed its intention to order eight 13,000 TEU container ships and acquire four newbuilds through resale, including three 2,800 TEU vessels and one 1,700 TEU vessel. These additions are expected to be delivered by December 31, 2029, significantly increasing HMM’s container fleet capacity by 114,100 TEU.
The company’s investment plan aligns with its “2026 Mid-to-Long-Term Strategy,” which outlines a substantial investment of around $21.712 billion by 2030 in various areas, including fleet expansion, ports, and logistics infrastructure. This strategic move reflects HMM’s commitment to enhancing its operations and market presence.
HMM’s Recent Orders and Expansion into Different Vessel Segments
In line with its growth strategy, HMM has placed orders for over 40 container ships, with confirmed shipyards for 34 vessels. These orders include a mix of vessel types, such as 13,000 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel container ships, 2,800 TEU container ships, and others, scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029.
Beyond container shipping, HMM is diversifying into other vessel segments, with orders for bulk carriers and very large gas and crude carriers. This expansion into different vessel categories underscores HMM’s commitment to broadening its maritime capabilities and market reach.
HMM’s Market Position and Future Outlook
As per Alphaliner data, HMM currently ranks as the world’s eighth-largest liner company, holding a 3% market share. With a fleet of 97 container ships and an orderbook of over 30 vessels, HMM is poised for further growth and expansion in the global shipping industry.
Overall, HMM’s strategic investments and fleet expansion plans signal a promising future for the company as it seeks to strengthen its position in the maritime sector and meet the evolving demands of the shipping market.
