SEAL BEACH, CA — This week marked a significant milestone for Anaheim Bay as the USS Tripoli, the largest naval warship to ever dock at the harbor, arrived on Tuesday. Navy Public Affairs Officer Gregg Smith hailed the event as a “historic week” for the Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach. The USS Tripoli, classified as a general-purpose amphibious assault ship, is equipped to handle a variety of missions, including humanitarian efforts and contingency operations.

USS Tripoli: A New Era for Naval Operations

The USS Tripoli stands out not only for its size but also for its versatility. Measuring 820 feet in length and weighing nearly 40,000 tons when fully loaded, this warship is designed to operate in challenging environments. According to the United States Navy, its “inherent capabilities” allow it to respond swiftly to emergencies and support various missions. While military personnel aboard the ship are engaged in routine operations, specific details remain undisclosed for security reasons.

Smith clarified that the ship’s presence is not related to upcoming events such as Memorial Day or Los Angeles Fleet Week, emphasizing that it will not be open for public visits. Instead, the USS Tripoli’s docking is part of standard military operations, primarily involving the loading and unloading of ammunition at the weapons station.

Transformations at Anaheim Bay Enable Larger Vessels

The arrival of the USS Tripoli is a direct result of a five-year project aimed at enhancing Anaheim Bay’s infrastructure. Prior to these upgrades, the largest vessels that docked at the base were San Antonio-class landing platform docks, which are 684 feet long and weigh around 25,000 tons when fully loaded. The recent improvements included the construction of a large ammunition pier and dredging the bay to expand the turning area, allowing for the safe docking of larger ships like the USS Tripoli.

Additionally, a new public boating channel has been established to ensure a safer distance between civilian vessels and military operations. These developments not only enhance the operational capabilities of the naval base but also signify a new chapter in its history, enabling it to accommodate some of the most advanced ships in the Navy’s fleet.
