Hybrid RoRo Vessel with OceanWings Sails to Serve European Space Sector by 2030

On September 9, 2026, Compagnie Maritime Nantaise announced its collaboration with Guangzhou Shipyard International to construct a groundbreaking hybrid roro vessel tailored to meet the escalating transport requirements of Europe’s space industry. This innovative ship, set for delivery by 2030, will combine traditional mechanical propulsion with three cutting-edge automated OceanWings rigid sails. Although the financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the ship’s primary function will be to transport launch vehicles, satellites, and other sensitive industrial cargo, including Vega-C components traveling between Europe and the Guiana Space Centre. Moreover, it will handle oversized Ariane 6 hardware and other vital aerospace payloads. The vessel’s cargo layout will feature a substantial main roro deck, a climate-controlled compartment for space-related items, and an adaptable open deck.

Enhancing European Space Sector Support

Marc-Antoine Girardet, the head of the maritime division of Sogestran Group, expressed that this new vessel marks a significant advancement in bolstering the European space sector. Compagnie Maritime Nantaise, a subsidiary of Sogestran Group, currently operates four roro ships, one research vessel, and six passenger ferries. Notably, this recent purchase follows a June pact between Compagnie Maritime Nantaise and Italy’s Avio aerospace firm, extending their longstanding 15-year partnership.

Incorporating Innovative Features

In addition to the state-of-the-art OceanWings sails, the vessel will boast a streamlined hull design, advanced weather routing capabilities, increased automation, and readiness for biofuel integration. These features are aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring seamless operations in the demanding space industry logistics landscape.
