India and Oman Strengthen Maritime Defence Ties with 6th Edition of Navy Staff Talks

 

New Delhi — In a significant step towards bolstering maritime defence relations, the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) concluded the 6th edition of their Staff Talks in New Delhi from June 4-5, 2024. This latest engagement underscores the enduring bilateral ties between the two historic maritime neighbors.

The RNO delegation was led by Commodore Jasim Mohammed Ali Al Balushi, Director General of Operations & Plans. Commodore Manmeet Singh Khurana, Commodore (Foreign Cooperation), headed the Indian delegation. The series of Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks highlights the robust and dynamic relationship between India and Oman.

During the discussions, both navies addressed common maritime security challenges, emphasizing the need for enhanced interoperability at sea. Key topics included operational collaboration, information sharing, maritime domain awareness, training, meteorology, hydrography, and technical assistance. These deliberations are crucial for ensuring coordinated efforts in safeguarding the shared maritime interests of both nations.

The RNO delegation also visited the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram, where they met with Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. The visit provided an opportunity to further explore avenues for cooperation and information sharing in maritime security.

Oman remains one of India’s closest partners in the Gulf region. The regular conduct of these Staff Talks plays a pivotal role in consolidating gains in naval cooperation and deepening the existing partnership between the two navies. This engagement not only reflects the mutual commitment to maritime security but also strengthens the broader strategic relationship between India and Oman.

As maritime neighbors with a rich history of cooperation, the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman continue to work together to address shared challenges and enhance their operational capabilities.
