India's Green Hydrogen Potential Gains Global Attention
India’s ability to produce Green Hydrogen is boosted by its natural advantages, such as abundant solar energy and ongoing investments in its power grid. Speaking at the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the nation’s growing capacity in this sector. With one of the largest synchronous grids globally and a solar capacity that has surged from 2.6 GW in 2014 to 85.5 GW today, India is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for green energy, both domestically and internationally.
Puri emphasized the vast investment potential, estimating that over Rs. 30 lakh crores would flow into the country to help achieve its renewable energy target of 500 GW by 2030. Multilateral development banks have pledged USD 27 billion to support India’s green initiatives. He further discussed the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an approved budget of Rs. 19,744 crores and a production target of 5 million tonnes by 2030. This mission aims to boost the development of renewable energy capacity, with incentives such as a 25-year waiver of inter-state transmission charges for Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia projects launched before June 2025.
In his address, Puri called for active industry support, stressing that collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to positioning India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi echoed this sentiment, describing Green Hydrogen as a key pathway to sustainability, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a greener future.
