India Launches First Autonomous Maritime Centre

Sagar Defence Engineering has officially commenced the construction of India’s first Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding and Systems Centre at the Juvvaladinne fishing harbour in Andhra Pradesh. The company has secured 29.58 acres of land from the Andhra Pradesh government, strategically located near the sea to facilitate vessel construction, testing, and deployment. This groundbreaking initiative aims to revolutionize maritime technology by focusing on the development of autonomous platforms.

Innovative Maritime Technology Development

The new maritime technology centre will specialize in creating a range of autonomous systems, including unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). It will also develop intelligent navigation systems, advanced maritime sensors, secure communication networks, and integrated command-and-control systems designed for autonomous operations. These innovations are set to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and mission capabilities in both defense and commercial sectors, allowing maritime platforms to operate with minimal human intervention.

As part of its ambitious technology roadmap, Sagar Defence plans to implement digital twin systems. These systems will generate virtual replicas of vessels and shipyard infrastructure, enabling engineers to simulate performance, test upgrades, and refine designs in a controlled environment. This approach is expected to significantly reduce costs and development timelines, streamlining the entire process from design to deployment.

Capt. Nikunj Parashar, the founder and CEO of Sagar Defence, emphasized that this initiative represents a pivotal advancement for India’s maritime manufacturing landscape. He noted that the centre will empower the nation to design, test, and produce next-generation unmanned maritime platforms domestically. This move not only strengthens maritime security but also fosters indigenous innovation, supported by the Andhra Pradesh government.

Smart Manufacturing and Broader Applications

The facility will incorporate advanced smart manufacturing processes to boost operational productivity. Robotic fabrication systems will automate essential tasks such as welding, cutting, painting, and assembly. Additionally, autonomous material-handling solutions, including robots and automated guided vehicles, will optimize the movement of components throughout the shipyard. The use of additive manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing, will enable the rapid production of specialized parts and critical spares, further enhancing efficiency.

Beyond its defense applications, the initiative is poised to contribute to the development of smart fishing fleet networks. These interconnected systems will provide vessels with real-time satellite and cloud-based data on fish locations, weather alerts, and fleet coordination. Furthermore, monitoring tools will be implemented to detect illegal fishing activities, promoting sustainable practices within the maritime industry.
