Indian Navy Showcases New Combatants on Republic Day
The Indian Navy proudly displayed its latest frontline combatants during the 76th Republic Day parade in New Delhi. The tableau featured three newly commissioned platforms: warships INS Surat and INS Nilgiri, along with submarine INS Vaghsheer. These vessels, commissioned in Mumbai on January 15, symbolize India’s growing naval capabilities and commitment to self-reliance, known as ‘Atmanirbharta.’
Significance of the New Naval Platforms
The commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer marks a pivotal advancement in India’s defense manufacturing and maritime security ambitions. According to the Defence Ministry, these platforms reflect India’s vision of becoming a global leader in naval capabilities.
INS Surat is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project. It ranks among the largest and most advanced destroyers worldwide, boasting an impressive 75% indigenous content. The ship is equipped with cutting-edge weapon-sensor systems and advanced network-centric capabilities, enhancing its operational effectiveness.
INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, showcases the Indian Navy’s design prowess. Developed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, it features advanced technologies for improved survivability, seakeeping, and stealth. This frigate represents the next generation of indigenous naval vessels, emphasizing India’s commitment to modernizing its fleet.
Finally, INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project. This submarine highlights India’s growing expertise in underwater warfare and construction, developed in collaboration with the Naval Group of France. Together, these platforms not only enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities but also signify a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
The parade also featured a mixed marching contingent and a Navy band, with members averaging 25 years of age. These personnel underwent specialized training for over two months, showcasing the Navy’s dedication to excellence and preparedness.
