Indian Navy to Commission 2 Warships, 1 Submarine for Frontline Fleet
The Indian Navy is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with the commissioning of three advanced vessels on January 15. The “Nilgiri” stealth frigate, the “Surat” stealth destroyer, and the “Vaghsheer” submarine will officially join the fleet during a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This significant event underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its defense through indigenization. All three platforms were designed and constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, showcasing India’s growing expertise in naval technology. Having completed rigorous trials and assessments, these vessels are ready for deployment following their commissioning.
Warships: Nilgiri and Surat
The “Nilgiri” is the lead ship of the Indian Navy’s Project 17A, which includes a total of seven stealth frigates. Launched in September 2019, the Nilgiri class builds upon the successful design of the earlier Shivalik-class frigates. This new class incorporates advanced technologies and enhancements to improve operational efficiency and combat readiness. The “Surat,” on the other hand, is the fourth and final ship of Project 15B, also known as the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers. This class represents an upgrade from the previous Kolkata-class destroyers, integrating modern systems and capabilities.
Both the Nilgiri and Surat are equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and stealth features. Their reduced radar signatures make them harder to detect, enhancing their effectiveness in various missions. The vessels are armed with weapon systems developed either indigenously or in collaboration with leading global manufacturers. They are also designed to operate a variety of helicopters, including the Chetak, ALH, Sea King, and the MH-60R Seahawks, which were commissioned in March 2024. Furthermore, these warships feature a rail-less helicopter traversing system and a visual aid landing system, ensuring efficient helicopter operations. As part of the Indian Navy’s initiative for gender inclusion, the ships include accommodations for female officers and sailors, marking a progressive step in naval operations.
Submarine: Vaghsheer
The “Vaghsheer” is a diesel-electric submarine and the sixth vessel in the Scorpene-class, also referred to as the Kalvari-class in India. This submarine was launched in April 2022 by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, in collaboration with the French Naval Group. The Vaghsheer is designed to perform a wide range of missions, showcasing its versatility and advanced capabilities. It features wire-guided torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, which enhance its offensive capabilities.
Additionally, the submarine is equipped with advanced sonar systems that improve its detection and tracking abilities. Its modular design allows it to adapt to various operational requirements, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and special operations. The commissioning of the Vaghsheer, alongside the Nilgiri and Surat, represents a significant milestone in India’s naval modernization efforts. These vessels not only bolster the Indian Navy’s operational readiness but also reflect the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing. As these platforms prepare to join the fleet, they symbolize India’s growing prowess in maritime defense and its strategic vision for the future.
