Indian Register of Shipping Certifies Indigenously Developed Marine Components for Defence Projects

Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has achieved a significant milestone by certifying various indigenously developed marine components for defence projects in compliance with national and international standards. These certifications play a crucial role in enhancing the defence and maritime manufacturing capabilities within the country.

Certification of Fouling-Release Coating

One of the certified projects is a fouling-release coating developed by DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL). This advanced coating is designed to prevent fouling due to marine growth on the underwater portion of hulls of ships and submarines. Currently undergoing user trials, the technology will soon be transferred for mass production, boosting the efficiency of naval vessels.

Certification of Innovative Technologies

Another notable certification is for a fully automated Marine Sewage Treatment Plant developed by M/s. Krasny Defence Technologies Ltd., ensuring compliance with environmental safety standards. Additionally, an “Intelligent Weld Inspector” developed by M/s. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. automates the recognition of weld defects, enhancing precision in non-destructive testing of welds. Moreover, M/s. QED Analytical LLP has designed an AI-based Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) sensor for wire rope testing, ensuring the safety and reliability of steel wire ropes.

Collaborative Certification Process

The certification process involved close collaboration between IRS and the developers, including technology assessments, quality assurance measures, and performance trials witnessed by experts. Cdr KK Dhawan, Head Defence IRS, highlighted the importance of collaboration with Indian industry partners to certify indigenously developed products for the defence and maritime industry. This collaboration signifies a positive step towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative by fostering innovation and self-reliance in the defence and maritime sectors.
