Indian Register of Shipping Partners with IIT Bombay to Enhance Maritime Safety

Indian Register of Shipping

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a ship trajectory prediction tool aimed at improving maritime safety. This collaboration seeks to enhance early warnings and rescue operation planning by accurately predicting the movement of disabled ships and drifting objects in the sea.

The project will focus on creating a tool that can quickly locate drifting vessels and reroute nearby ships, thus boosting maritime safety. The tool will include a computer program with automated report generation, to be integrated into the existing IRS Emergency Response System (ERS) software.

Professors Manas Behera and VK Srineash of IIT Bombay emphasized the importance of this industry-academia collaboration, aiming to develop ‘Made in India’ software to enhance maritime safety and rescue operations. Mr. P K Mishra, Joint Managing Director of IRS, highlighted the shared commitment to leveraging technology for better maritime safety and response capabilities.
