Indian Register of Shipping strengthens role in major Defence Projects

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is enhancing India’s defense capabilities through its involvement in significant construction projects for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. This effort aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to boost self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Major Vessel Construction Milestones
Recently, the IRS celebrated a key milestone with the ‘steel-cutting’ of several new vessels. These vessels are crucial for strengthening India’s maritime defense. The projects include the second Fleet Support Ship at L&T Shipbuilding, the first Next Generation Missile Vessel at Cochin Shipyard Ltd, and the second Next Generation Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. Additionally, the first Coast Guard Fast Patrol Vessels are also under construction at Mazagon Dock. The keel laying of the third Cadet Training Ship at L&T further underscores this initiative.
The simultaneous production of these advanced naval and coast guard platforms presents a unique challenge. The complexity of the Next Generation Missile Vessels and Fleet Support Ships will test the technical capabilities of the IRS. As these projects unfold across multiple shipyards, the IRS is committed to ensuring that all vessels meet stringent safety and performance standards.
Cdr. K K Dhawan (Retd), Head Defence at IRS, emphasized the significance of this milestone. He stated, “This milestone signifies India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defense manufacturing. IRS is honored to play a pivotal role in ensuring these vessels meet the highest standards of safety and performance.” He assured that the IRS would take all necessary steps to ensure timely delivery of classification services while adhering to quality benchmarks. This commitment reflects the IRS’s dedication to supporting India’s defense modernization efforts.
