India’s first indigenous ASW warship, Arnala, to be commissioned today
INS Arnala: India's First Indigenous Anti-Submarine Craft Launched

New Delhi: The Indian Navy proudly commissioned INS Arnala today, marking a significant milestone as the country’s first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC). The commissioning took place at the Visakhapatnam dockyard under the Eastern Naval Command, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in defense manufacturing.
The Navy’s spokesperson shared a post on X, detailing Arnala’s journey from concept to warship, accompanied by a video that highlights the dedication and expertise involved in its construction. This event underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its naval strength through indigenous technology.
Significance of INS Arnala
INS Arnala, the first of eight ASW SWCs, was constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and delivered to the Indian Navy on May 8 at L&T Shipyard in Kattupalli. This vessel is a testament to the successful collaboration between public and private sectors in India’s defense manufacturing landscape.
Named after the historic Arnala Fort located off the coast of Vasai, Maharashtra, the warship pays homage to India’s rich maritime heritage. Measuring 77 meters in length, Arnala is the largest Indian naval warship powered by a diesel engine-waterjet combination. Its design focuses on underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations, and Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO). Additionally, it is equipped for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) in coastal waters and advanced mine-laying missions.
The induction of ASW SWC ships significantly enhances the Indian Navy’s capabilities in shallow-water anti-submarine warfare. According to a government press release, “Arnala’s delivery is yet another milestone in the Indian Navy’s quest for indigenous shipbuilding and upholding the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ with over 80 percent indigenous content.” This development reflects India’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense infrastructure and self-reliance in military capabilities.
Future Prospects
The commissioning of INS Arnala is not just a celebration of a new vessel but also a step forward in India’s strategic maritime defense. As the Navy continues to expand its fleet with indigenous designs, the focus remains on enhancing operational readiness and technological advancement.
With the successful launch of Arnala, the Indian Navy is poised to strengthen its presence in coastal waters, ensuring enhanced security and surveillance capabilities. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering a robust defense manufacturing ecosystem in India, paving the way for future innovations in naval warfare.
