The ship, which was built in 1977, developed leaks and began to list dangerously to port. By the time rescue teams arrived, the vessel had a 25-degree list. The incident occurred near Madura Island, off the northeastern coast of Java, as the ship was en route to Surabaya from Banjarmasin.

Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
The Tanjung Perak Port Authority and local rescue teams were alerted to the emergency on Saturday, January 18. The captain of the Suryani Ladjoni reported water ingress, prompting immediate action. The patrol boat KM Palung Mas was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the patrol boat initially anchored due to unfavorable weather conditions, which delayed the rescue operation.
Despite the challenges, the rescue team determined that the crew would need to enter the ship’s life rafts for safety. The patrol boat maneuvered to allow the crew to board the rafts, which were then pulled alongside the rescue vessel. All 18 crew members were successfully transferred to the KM Palung Mas and later transported to Teluk Lamong Port. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and the survivors received medical treatment.
Authorities have confirmed that the Suryani Ladjoni did not sink but is currently drifting at a speed of 0.2 knots in an eastward direction. Maritime officials are warning other vessels in the area of potential hazards posed by the drifting cargo ship. The incident highlights the importance of swift emergency response in maritime operations.
