Ingalls Shipbuilding chooses American Fan for Arleigh Burke-class ventilation

Fairbanks Morse Defense Secures Navy Contracts

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) has announced a significant achievement, securing multiple contracts to provide cooling and ventilation fans for ten Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers. The manufacturing will take place at FMD’s American Fan facility in Fairfield, Ohio, with installations planned for future vessels including the USS Thomas Kelley and USS Ernest E. Evans. This initiative is part of the U.S. Navy’s multi-year procurement strategy for the DDG 51 program, spanning fiscal years 2023 to 2027.

Details of the Contracts

The contracts awarded to Fairbanks Morse Defense involve the supply of essential ventilation systems designed to enhance the operational efficiency of the Navy’s newest destroyers. These systems will include gas turbine room blowers, collective protection system fans, and both vaneaxial and centrifugal fans, which are crucial for machinery room cooling and overall shipboard climate control. The specific ships benefiting from these installations include the USS Charles J. French, USS Richard J. Danzig, and USS Michael G. Mullen, among others.

This procurement is part of a broader initiative by the U.S. Navy, which has also awarded contracts to Ingalls Shipbuilding and General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works for the construction of the ten Flight III destroyers. Ingalls Shipbuilding has chosen American Fan to supply ventilation systems for seven of these vessels, demonstrating a strong partnership in advancing naval capabilities.

Paul Brown, vice president and general manager of American Fan, emphasized the importance of this contract, stating, “Fairbanks Morse Defense and American Fan have a long history of supporting national security through equipment and services that ensure reliable operations and minimal downtime.” He noted that the selection of their ventilation systems for the DDG program reflects the Navy’s trust in their products and expertise, reinforcing their commitment to national defense.
