Inland Waterways To See Rs 50,000-Crore Investment In 5 Years
The Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) has announced a significant investment plan aimed at enhancing the inland waterways network in India. During its second meeting held in Kaziranga, the council revealed plans to invest over Rs 50,000 crore in the next five years. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve infrastructure along national waterways (NWs) and promote socio-economic development in coastal communities. The IWDC, which serves as the apex body for policy discussions on inland waterways, aims to rejuvenate this vital transport system, making it more efficient and sustainable.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The IWDC’s recent meeting, presided over by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted a series of new initiatives worth more than Rs 1,400 crore across 21 inland waterways. These initiatives are designed to boost infrastructure and improve the overall efficiency of the inland waterways transport (IWT) system. The Riverine Community Development Scheme was introduced to enhance the socio-economic well-being of coastal communities. This scheme focuses on developing infrastructure, promoting trade and tourism, and providing skill training to local populations.
Sonowal emphasized the importance of inland waterways in decongesting railways and roadways. He stated that the government aims to provide a viable and sustainable mode of transportation for both passengers and cargo operators. The IWDC is also planning to launch 1,000 green vessels, which will contribute to environmental sustainability. The focus on employment generation and skill training is a key aspect of this initiative. Major projects for upgrading IWT have been conceived, including the development of shipbuilding and repair facilities across all national waterways. This will not only reduce logistics costs but also create job opportunities for local communities.
Regional Development and Future Prospects
The IWDC’s initiatives extend beyond infrastructure development. The council aims to facilitate regional trade and transport connectivity in South Asia through strategic projects and agreements with neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. This approach is expected to enhance economic ties and promote seamless transport across borders.
In Andhra Pradesh, the announcement of six floating steel jetties on the Godavari River marks a significant step in boosting IWT in the region. Additionally, a feasibility study on the Penna River and the development of a Regional Centre of Excellence in Dibrugarh, Assam, will further strengthen the IWT sector. The centre will focus on training and developing manpower, ensuring that the workforce is equipped with the necessary skills for this growing industry.
The meeting also addressed various projects across different states, including the establishment of jetties in Goa and Jammu and Kashmir. These developments are part of a larger vision to operationalize rivers like Chenab and Ravi for tourism, thereby promoting economic growth through river cruise tourism. The IWDC’s commitment to enhancing the inland waterways network is expected to yield significant benefits for local communities and the economy as a whole.
