Installation Of Main Engine Boosts ASCO’s Ro-Pax Ferry Construction
BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 20, 2024 — The Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) has reached a significant milestone in the construction of its latest Ro-Pax ferry at the Baku Shipyard. The installation of the main engines has been successfully completed, marking a crucial step in the project. This new ferry is designed to carry both passengers and vehicles, including automotive units and railcars, enhancing the company’s operational capabilities.
The Ro-Pax ferry type is particularly notable for its ability to transport more than 12 passengers alongside roll-on/roll-off cargo. This versatility makes it an essential asset for ASCO, which aims to improve transportation services across the Caspian Sea. The hull fabrication of the ferry is currently at an advanced stage, with 80 percent of the structural work finalized. This progress indicates that the project is on track to meet its established timeline.
In addition to the hull work, the integration of essential systems is also underway. Piping systems, electrical infrastructure, and ventilation mechanisms are being installed concurrently. This comprehensive approach ensures that all components of the ferry are aligned and functioning properly before the vessel is launched. The successful completion of these tasks is vital for the ferry’s operational readiness and overall safety.
ASCO’s Expanding Fleet and Future Plans
The new Ro-Pax ferry is the third of its kind being constructed at the Baku Shipyard for ASCO. The company previously launched two similar ferries, named “Azerbaijan” and “Zarifa Aliyeva.” These vessels are currently in service, facilitating cargo transportation along the Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). This route plays a crucial role in connecting various regions and enhancing trade.
ASCO was formed through the merger of Azerbaijan’s primary maritime fleets, including the Azerbaijan State Caspian Sea Shipping Company and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic’s Caspian Sea Oil Fleet. This merger has allowed ASCO to consolidate its resources and capabilities, resulting in a more efficient and robust maritime operation. The company now boasts two shipyards and a diverse fleet that includes 51 vessels: 20 tankers, 12 ferries, 16 dry cargo ships, 1 Ro-Ro, and 2 Ro-Pax ferries.
By integrating these fleets, ASCO takes on significant responsibilities in maritime transport. The company aims to enhance its service offerings and expand its reach in the Caspian region. The ongoing construction of the new Ro-Pax ferry is a testament to ASCO’s commitment to improving its fleet and meeting the growing demands of maritime transportation. As the project progresses, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the ferry’s launch and the positive impact it will have on regional trade and travel.
