Investigation Launched After Tourist Boat Sinks in Indonesia

Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) – The West Manggarai Police have initiated an investigation into the sinking of the tourist vessel KM Putri Sakinah in the Padar Strait, which occurred on December 26, 2025. The incident involved six Spanish tourists, including a coach from Spain’s Valencia women’s football team and his family. As search efforts continue, authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the accident and the vessel’s compliance with safety regulations.

Details of the Incident and Ongoing Search Efforts

The KM Putri Sakinah capsized while navigating from Kalong Island to Padar Island, reportedly due to engine failure. This mechanical issue left the boat unable to maneuver, leading to its collision with high waves that ultimately caused it to sink. As of now, the search and rescue teams are still actively searching for Martin Carreras Fernando and two of his children, who remain unaccounted for. Tragically, one child was found deceased on December 29, while Fernando’s wife and another child were rescued along with four crew members, including the captain and a tour guide.

Senior Commissioner Henry Novika Chandra, the Head of Public Relations for the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, confirmed that the investigation commenced on December 31, 2025. The West Manggarai Police have submitted a Notice of Commencement of Investigation to the local District Attorney’s Office. Investigators plan to interview witnesses, crew members, and the vessel’s operator, as well as assess the boat’s seaworthiness and adherence to maritime safety protocols.

Context of Maritime Safety Concerns

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as at least 15 tourist boat accidents have been reported in the waters around Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park from 2024 to the end of 2025. Most of these accidents occurred near Padar Island, Komodo Island, and Rinca Island, often attributed to adverse weather conditions or technical failures. Preliminary investigations suggest that the weather and sea conditions at the time of the KM Putri Sakinah’s sinking exacerbated the situation, complicating rescue efforts for both crew and passengers.

Authorities have indicated that legal action may be pursued against the operators of the tourist boat if negligence is established. The ongoing investigation aims to ensure accountability and improve safety measures in the region, which is a popular destination for tourists. As the search for the remaining missing individuals continues, the focus remains on uncovering the full circumstances of this tragic maritime incident.
