IRS Boosts India’s Naval Defense Manufacturing

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is playing a crucial role in enhancing India’s defense capabilities. By engaging in significant new construction projects for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, IRS supports the nation’s goal of self-reliance in defense manufacturing. This initiative aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat program, which aims to bolster indigenous production across various sectors.

New Construction Projects Underway

Recently, the IRS marked a significant milestone with the ‘steel-cutting’ of several major vessels. These new constructions include the second Fleet Support Ship at L&T Shipbuilding, the first Next Generation Missile Vessel at Cochin Shipyard Ltd, and both the second Next Generation Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel and the first Coast Guard Fast Patrol Vessels at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. Additionally, the keel laying of the third Cadet Training Ship at L&T has commenced.

The simultaneous production of these advanced naval and coast guard platforms presents a unique challenge for the IRS. The complexity of the Next Generation Missile Vessels and Fleet Support Ships, along with their construction across multiple shipyards, will test the IRS’s technical capabilities and capacity. This undertaking is not just about building ships; it is about ensuring that these vessels meet the highest standards of safety and performance.

Commander K K Dhawan (Retd), Head of Defence at IRS, emphasized the importance of this milestone. He stated, “This milestone signifies India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence manufacturing, and IRS is honoured to play a pivotal role in ensuring these vessels meet the highest standards of safety and performance.” He assured that the IRS would take all necessary steps to ensure timely delivery of classification services while adhering to quality benchmarks. This commitment reflects the IRS’s dedication to supporting India’s defense sector as it evolves and expands.
