Itochu orders world’s first ammonia bunkering vessel

Itochu to Launch World’s First Ammonia Bunkering Vessel

Japanese trading powerhouse Itochu Corporation is poised to make maritime history by launching the world’s first ammonia bunkering vessel by September 2027. The company has secured a shipbuilding contract with Sasaki Shipbuilding for a 5,000 cubic meter vessel, which will be based in Singapore, the leading global bunkering hub. This strategic move positions Itochu to take a leading role in the burgeoning ammonia fuel sector, from production to delivery.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans

Through its Singapore-based bunkering subsidiary, Itochu is not only investing in the construction of the ammonia bunkering vessel but also collaborating with Izumi Steel Works to develop an ammonia tank plant that will be integrated into the ship. This initiative is part of Itochu’s broader strategy to establish green ammonia production hubs and enhance its capabilities in the ammonia supply chain.

“K” Line: Memorandum of Understanding Regarding the Joint Development of Ammonia-Fueled Bulk Carriers Signed

By entering the ammonia bunkering market early, Itochu aims to lead in the full value chain, encompassing ammonia production, logistics, and shipboard delivery. The company has been actively engaging in partnerships with Japanese shipbuilders, fuel suppliers, and classification societies to advance the design of ammonia-fueled vessels and to navigate the regulatory landscape surrounding this innovative fuel source.

As the maritime industry increasingly shifts towards sustainable fuel alternatives, several countries, including Singapore, Norway, and South Korea, are exploring ammonia bunkering. Many ammonia-ready vessels are already on the global order book, indicating a growing interest in this eco-friendly fuel option. Itochu’s proactive approach positions it at the forefront of this transition, setting the stage for a greener future in maritime operations.
