IWAI discusses development plan of NW 5 passing through Odisha

Senior officials from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) met to discuss plans for the smooth development of National Waterway 5 (NW-5), which passes through Odisha. The meeting, led by IWAI Chairman Vijay Kumar, included key officials from the Shipping Ministry and other stakeholders working on the project.

The focus of the high-level meeting was on reviewing the financial analysis report and planning the way forward for developing the waterway. Officials and partners exchanged ideas on how to improve the waterway infrastructure, making sure the project moves forward smoothly.

What is National Waterway 5?

National Waterway 5 (NW-5) is one of the six national waterways in India, playing a vital role in connecting parts of Odisha and West Bengal. It stretches for a total of 623 kilometers, with 532 kilometers passing through Odisha and 91 kilometers within West Bengal. This waterway is expected to enhance trade and transportation in the region by providing a cost-effective and eco-friendly mode of transport.

The development of NW-5 is significant for promoting economic growth and reducing pressure on road and rail networks. Once operational, it will boost the movement of goods, especially minerals, coal, and agricultural products, across both states.

Why is the Development of NW-5 Important?

Developing NW-5 offers multiple benefits:

  1. Faster Trade: It will improve the transport of goods between Odisha, West Bengal, and other states.
  2. Eco-Friendly Transport: Waterways produce fewer emissions compared to road or rail transport.
  3. Lower Costs: Water transport is cheaper for moving bulk goods like coal, iron ore, and food grains.
  4. Reduced Road Traffic: With better water transport, road congestion and accidents will decrease.

What’s Next?

IWAI and the Shipping Ministry will work closely with stakeholders to finalize the financial and technical plans for the development. Steps will also be taken to upgrade river routes, improve port facilities, and build infrastructure for cargo handling along the route.

The officials at the meeting emphasized the importance of timely execution to ensure NW-5 becomes a reliable route for inland transport. They aim to boost trade, create jobs, and help the economy of both Odisha and West Bengal grow.
