Japan Innovates with First Mass-Produced USVs

On October 17, Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of NYK Group, announced a groundbreaking joint agreement with ocean-tech startup Oceanic Constellations Inc. This collaboration aims to establish the first mass-production system for small unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in Japan, addressing critical maritime challenges and enhancing ocean monitoring capabilities.

Strategic Partnership for Ocean Surveillance

Keihin Dock and Oceanic Constellations are set to revolutionize maritime operations through their partnership. The agreement focuses on developing a reliable mass-production system for small USVs equipped with advanced sensors and communication networks, a project dubbed “Oceanic Constellations.” This initiative not only aims to enhance ocean surveillance but also facilitates data collection and improves communication in marine environments.

Keihin Dock is recognized as the sole shipyard in the NYK Group and has been a pioneer in creating innovative, eco-friendly vessels. Notably, the company constructed the world’s first commercial ammonia-fueled vessel, Sakigake, among other advanced ship designs. By merging its shipbuilding expertise with Oceanic Constellations’ digital engineering prowess, this collaboration is poised to yield Japan’s first mass-produced USVs, which will have significant real-world applications.

The new USVs are expected to address various marine environmental challenges and support NYK’s offshore reusable rocket recovery system. NYK has been actively expanding its business into space operations since establishing its Advanced Tech and Space Business Development Team in April 2023. Their previous partnership with Oceanic Constellations, formalized in a memorandum of understanding in June, further solidifies their strategic alignment in tackling maritime and space-related projects.

About the Innovators Behind the Project

Oceanic Constellations Inc., founded in November 2023 in Kamakura, is a pioneering startup dedicated to transforming ocean monitoring through a network of USVs. The team, comprised of experts in space, IT, academia, and the automotive sector, aims to integrate advanced swarm-control technology with oceanic communication and energy management systems. With 25 patents filed, 18 of which are secured, OC is actively collaborating with government agencies, local authorities, and academic institutions to achieve full-scale commercialization by 2027.

Keihin Dock Co., Ltd. has a rich history dating back to 1968 and is situated in Tokyo Bay. The company specializes in building and repairing small to medium-sized vessels while championing eco-friendly shipbuilding practices. Its significant achievements include constructing Japan’s first hybrid-powered tugboat and the world’s first LNG-fueled tugboat, evolving to produce Japan’s first fully battery-driven work vessel and electric propulsion tugboat. Through this new collaboration, Keihin Dock aims to continue its legacy of innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry.
