Japanese shipping company keen to invest in Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector
Japan’s renowned shipping company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), has expressed its eagerness to invest in Bangladesh’s growing ship recycling sector and collaborate on technological advancements. The company aims to establish a long-term partnership with Bangladesh, focusing on environmentally sustainable ship recycling practices, technology transfer, and the development of skilled workforce.
Mutual Interest in Sustainable Ship Recycling
During a meeting with Industries, Commerce, Textiles, and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir in Dhaka, a high-level delegation from MOL conveyed their interest in exploring opportunities in Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector. Minister Muktadir emphasized the pivotal role ship recycling and shipbuilding could play in Bangladesh’s industrialization, job creation, and economic progress.
Potential for Growth and Collaboration
Minister Muktadir highlighted Bangladesh’s significant presence in the ship recycling industry, boasting experienced workforce and robust infrastructure. With around 31 green ship recycling facilities currently operational in the country, Bangladesh aims to expand its ship recycling capacity further in the coming years. The minister emphasized that Bangladesh’s ambition extends beyond ship recycling to establishing a strong foundation for the shipbuilding industry.
Japanese Expertise and Partnership
Minister Muktadir underscored the importance of Japan’s technological prowess, advanced management practices, and extensive experience in shipbuilding, which could greatly benefit Bangladesh’s maritime sector. He stressed the potential for transforming the ship recycling and shipbuilding industries into a cohesive and robust industrial base through collaborative efforts between the two nations.
The MOL delegation expressed keen interest in investing in Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector, fostering technological cooperation, skill development, and establishing a long-term partnership. The meeting, attended by Industries Secretary Abdun Naser Khan, MOL General Manager Kentaro Ueda, Global Ship Recycling Project Manager Takaha Uematsu, MOL Senior Director Senji Tokumoto, and senior ministry officials, highlighted the mutual benefits of collaboration between Japan and Bangladesh in the maritime domain.
