Japan’s Electric Tugboat Set to Revolutionize Maritime Industry

Corvus Energy, a leader in zero-emission maritime solutions, has been chosen to provide battery systems for an innovative electric tugboat. This vessel, being constructed by Keihin Dock Co., Ltd. for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), will feature Corvus Energy’s Orca Energy battery systems, boasting a capacity of 2,712 kWh. This project marks a significant step in Japan’s commitment to achieving carbon-neutral ports.

Advancing Sustainable Maritime Operations

The new electric tugboat is a pivotal development in Japan’s journey towards sustainable maritime operations. Designed with a focus on environmental responsibility, the tugboat will utilize Japan’s first domestically manufactured large-capacity motor drive system, provided by TMEIC Corporation. Additionally, it will incorporate a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS), enhancing both crew comfort and safety while ensuring powerful zero-emission propulsion.

This initiative aligns with NYK’s “Co-Creating the Future” program, which aims to foster greener maritime practices. The project has received backing from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Support Project for the Development of Technologies to Promote Transformation in Coastal Shipping, underscoring its significance in promoting maritime innovation and sustainability.

Satohiko Kodama, Manager of the Project Engineering Team at NYK Line, emphasized the collaborative effort behind this vessel, stating, “This vessel is the result of our collective innovation—a ‘Tugboat of the Future’ that cares for both people and the planet.” He highlighted the integration of advanced electric propulsion and state-of-the-art energy storage technology as a crucial step towards realizing zero-emission ports.

Innovative Battery Solutions for Tugboats

Corvus Energy’s involvement in this project signifies its growing influence in the realm of zero-emission solutions. Ole Jacob Irgens, EVP and Head of Regional Sales for Europe and Asia at Corvus Energy, expressed pride in collaborating with NYK and Keihin Dock on this groundbreaking electric tug project. He noted that more than ten vessels in Japan are already operating with Corvus battery systems, reinforcing the company’s leadership in battery technology.

Irgens explained the advantages of battery systems for tugboats, stating, “Batteries are ideally suited for tugboats because they enable zero-emission operations during idling and low-power maneuvers.” This hybrid approach allows diesel engines to be used only when maximum thrust is necessary, significantly reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise while enhancing efficiency.

The battery system will be supplied in partnership with Sumisho Marine Co., Ltd., with delivery scheduled for June 2026. The tugboat is expected to commence operations by the end of 2026 under NAIKAI TUG BOAT SERVICE CO., LTD., a subsidiary of the NYK Group. This project not only showcases technological advancements but also highlights Japan’s commitment to maritime decarbonization and sustainable practices.
