John T. Essberger Expands Fleet with New Chemical Tankers
German chemical tanker owner John T. Essberger is advancing its fleet renewal strategy by placing firm orders for two new chemical tankers at China Merchants Industry Yangzhou Dingheng. The Hamburg-based company has also secured options for an additional two vessels, bringing the total potential order to four. These newbuildings, each with a deadweight tonnage of 7,900 dwt, are designed to meet the specific needs of chemical parcel trades in Northern Europe and will be constructed to Ice Class 1A standards. The first of these vessels is expected to be delivered in August 2028.
This latest order is part of Essberger’s long-term initiative to replace older ships with more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives. The company aims to align its fleet with evolving regulatory and operational demands in the maritime industry. Eberhart von Rantzau, managing owner of John T. Essberger, emphasized the commitment to modernizing the fleet, stating, “We are committed to replacing our older ships with new, environmentally optimised tonnage.” He added that the new vessels are specifically designed for the challenges of coastal chemical shipping in Europe, which will enhance the company’s operational capabilities starting in 2028.
Recent Contracting Activity and Future Plans
The order for the new chemical tankers follows a period of significant contracting activity for John T. Essberger. In late 2024, the company ordered up to six 13,000-dwt Ice Class 1A chemical tankers from Nantong Rainbow Offshore & Engineering Equipment. Additionally, in 2021, Essberger placed orders for eight stainless steel parcel tankers at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. Currently, four larger 13,800 dwt chemical tankers are under construction at the Rainbow yard, with plans for them to join the fleet before the new 7,900 dwt units are delivered.
The new chemical tankers will measure 119.9 meters in length, have a beam of 18 meters, and a maximum draught of 6.85 meters. They will feature a cargo tank volume of approximately 8,950 cubic meters. Essberger’s chemical tanker fleet operates in collaboration with Stolt-Nielsen under the E&S Tankers joint venture. This strategic partnership aims to enhance operational efficiency and expand market reach in the chemical shipping sector.
As the maritime industry continues to evolve, John T. Essberger’s proactive approach to fleet renewal positions the company to meet future challenges while adhering to environmental standards and operational efficiency. The introduction of these new vessels marks a significant step in the company’s commitment to sustainability and modernization in the chemical shipping market.
