K-Line and Havstjerne Team Up for CO2 Solutions

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has announced a strategic partnership between its London-based subsidiary, “K” LINE Energy Shipping (UK) Limited (KLES), and Havstjerne ANS (HANS). This collaboration aims to develop effective transportation, injection, and storage solutions for the Havstjerne CO2 storage license located on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), seeks to enhance the maturity of these solutions while leveraging both companies’ expertise in the field.
Innovative Approaches to CO2 Storage
Under the MoU, KLES and HANS will work together to optimize technical and commercial solutions for a marine-based CO2 value chain. This initiative will focus on utilizing a floating storage and injection unit (FSIU) along with liquefied CO2 carriers. The collaboration aims to create a robust and cost-effective service for CO2 transport and storage, catering to emitters involved in the Havstjerne CO2 value chain.
Offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects are increasingly recognized as safe and efficient methods for permanently storing significant volumes of CO2. FSIUs are particularly advantageous in offshore CCS projects, especially in regions where securing land for onshore CO2 receiving terminals is challenging or where long pipelines would be necessary to connect to offshore storage sites. The Havstjerne license is strategically located in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Egersund, and is in close proximity to key Northern European ports.
The ownership of the Havstjerne license is divided, with Harbour Energy holding a 60% stake as the operator, while Stella Maris CCS AS, a subsidiary of Yinson Production, owns the remaining 40%. Yinson Production brings extensive experience in the offshore energy sector, operating a fleet of floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels. Since 2021, the company has been actively investing in carbon capture technologies to develop its carbon value chain.

K-Line’s Commitment to Sustainability
The “K” LINE Group has a rich history in managing liquefied gas carriers and has been at the forefront of CO2 transport and storage solutions. Since 2024, KLES has been managing two liquefied CO2 carriers for the world’s first commercial CO2 transport and storage service. This initiative aligns with the “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050, which outlines the company’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.
Through this partnership and its ongoing CCS initiatives, “K” LINE aims to support its decarbonization efforts and contribute to a sustainable society. The collaboration with Havstjerne represents a significant step forward in enhancing the corporate value of “K” LINE while addressing the pressing challenges of climate change.
