“K” LINE endowed research project with Rikkyo Educational
"K Line Partners for Marine Environmental Research"
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has entered into a significant partnership with Rikkyo Educational Corporation to advance marine environmental research. This collaboration focuses on developing environmentally friendly materials and technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. The project, titled “Social Implementation of Future Marine Environmentally Harmonious Materials,” will leverage the expertise of both organizations to create innovative solutions for a sustainable marine environment.
Innovative CO2 Capture Technology
As part of this initiative, “K” LINE has established the Advanced Technology Future Environment Project Laboratory at Rikkyo University. This facility will facilitate industry-academia collaboration, particularly in the development of an on-board CO2 capturing system. The project utilizes Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF), a porous material known for its ability to absorb gases. Under the guidance of Professor Mao Minoura from the Department of Chemistry, the research team aims to evaluate the performance of MOF in capturing CO2 from vessel exhaust gases.
“K” LINE is already making strides in decarbonization efforts, including the operation of liquefied CO2 carriers. The company is exploring Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS) technology, which focuses on separating, capturing, and storing CO2 emissions from vessels. In 2021, “K” LINE conducted the “CC-OCEAN” project, marking the world’s first successful demonstration of an on-board CO2 capturing device. This project successfully captured CO2 from engine exhaust, paving the way for further advancements in marine emission reduction technologies.
Strengthening Naval Ties: Spain and Thailand Collaborate on Frigate Construction
The current research project aims to clarify the applicability of MOF for on-board CO2 capture by assessing its absorption and desorption capabilities in the presence of exhaust gases. This research is crucial for expanding “K” LINE’s OCCS technology and enhancing its environmental initiatives. Committed to its long-term environmental strategy, “K” LINE continues to prioritize research and development efforts that support decarbonization for both the company and society, aligning with its Environmental Vision 2050.
