K Line Partners with Gail and J M Baxi for LNG Carrier Ownership
Japan’s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has announced a significant partnership with Gail, India’s largest state-owned natural gas company, and J M Baxi Group, a key business ally in India. The collaboration centers around the joint ownership of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) currently under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. The vessel is set to enter service under a long-term time charter with Gail upon its delivery.
The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony held on January 27, 2026, which was attended by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. This initiative aligns with K Line’s strategic goal of expanding its presence in emerging markets, particularly in Asia, as outlined in its medium-term management plan. The partnership aims to enhance K Line’s operational capabilities and strengthen its relationships with both Gail and J M Baxi.
Strategic Expansion in the LNG Market
K Line’s collaboration with Gail and J M Baxi is part of a broader strategy to capitalize on the growing demand for liquefied natural gas in Asia. The Japanese shipping company has a well-established history of working with J M Baxi in India, providing agency services and logistics operations. This new venture into joint ownership of the LNG carrier is expected to bolster K Line’s position in the Indian market and facilitate the development of new business opportunities.
The partnership follows K Line’s recent activities in the LNG sector, including a long-term time charter contract with Gail announced on December 2, 2024. By jointly owning the LNG carrier, K Line aims to meet the diverse energy needs of its customers while expanding its portfolio of long-term contracts. The company is committed to accommodating the increasing demand for energy in the region, which is crucial for its growth strategy.
In addition to this LNG vessel arrangement, K Line has also been active in the carbon capture sector, recently revealing the delivery of a third liquefied CO2 carrier for a joint venture with Northern Lights. This diversification into both LNG and CO2 transportation underscores K Line’s commitment to addressing the evolving energy landscape and its dedication to sustainable practices.
