KEYS Azalea Bunkered LNG for The Cruise Ship ASUKA III
Japan's Historic LNG Bunkering for Cruise Ship

On July 14, a significant milestone was achieved in Japan as the KEYS Azalea, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel, successfully completed ship-to-ship LNG bunkering for the cruise ship ASUKA III at Chuo Wharf in Hakata Port. This operation marks the first time that LNG has been provided to a cruise ship by KEYS Azalea, which previously serviced only car carriers and bulk carriers. KEYS Bunkering West Japan Ltd. aims to enhance its contributions toward a carbon-neutral society while developing the LNG bunkering sector in Japan.
First-of-Its-Kind Operation at Hakata Port
The successful LNG bunkering operation represents a pivotal moment for the cruise industry in Japan, showcasing the potential for cleaner energy alternatives in maritime transportation. The ASUKA III, operated by NYK, is designed to utilize multiple fuel types, including LNG, which underscores the industry’s shift toward more sustainable practices. The connection between the KEYS Azalea and ASUKA III was executed through a direct hose link, a method known as ship-to-ship bunkering. This procedure facilitates the efficient transfer of LNG fuel directly from the bunkering vessel to the receiving ship.
KEYS Bunkering West Japan Ltd. has plans to continue its efforts in providing safe and reliable LNG bunkering services. The company is dedicated to promoting LNG as a viable fuel option and aims to contribute to the development of a carbon-neutral society. This initiative aligns with global trends towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in shipping operations. With the successful completion of this operation, Japan is poised to become a leader in LNG bunkering for cruise ships, enhancing both its maritime capabilities and environmental sustainability.
