Kim Jong Un Showcases New Nuclear Submarine
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inspected the construction of an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered strategic missile submarine, underscoring Pyongyang’s commitment to modernizing its naval capabilities amid escalating regional tensions. During the visit, Kim received updates from senior officials in the shipbuilding and defense sectors, emphasizing the submarine’s critical role in the nation’s defense strategy.
Submarine Development and Strategic Importance
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim’s inspection took place at a shipyard where he was briefed on the submarine project’s progress. This submarine is part of a broader initiative to enhance the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) naval deterrence, a priority identified during the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Eighth Congress. Kim highlighted the strategic significance of the submarine, describing it as essential for the country’s war deterrence capabilities.
During the tour, Kim reiterated that the DPRK’s military doctrine focuses on deterrence through strength, particularly through systems that ensure second-strike survivability. The new submarine aims to extend the reach and resilience of the DPRK Navy, particularly in underwater operations, as the country continues to advance its naval and nuclear technologies despite enduring international sanctions. Officials praised the dedication of engineers, scientists, and shipyard workers who are driving the project forward under challenging conditions.
Kim also voiced concerns over South Korea’s reported plans for US-backed nuclear submarines, labeling them a direct threat to North Korea’s maritime security and sovereignty. He argued that the increasing military coordination between the United States and South Korea necessitates an accelerated modernization of the Korean People’s Navy (KPN) and its nuclear capabilities. In addition to the submarine project, Kim reviewed plans for new ships and underwater weapons, emphasizing the urgency of enhancing the navy amid rising military tensions in the region.
Technological Advancements and Future Prospects
KCNA released images of the nearly completed submarine, which is expected to undergo sea trials soon. Kim referred to the submarine as an “epoch-making” advancement that will enhance long-endurance operations and striking power. He framed the acceleration of this project as a direct response to South Korea’s plans for a US-backed nuclear submarine by 2025.
This new 8,700-ton submarine represents a significant leap in the DPRK’s naval capabilities. Unlike the diesel-powered Hero Kim Kun Ok, this vessel is nuclear-powered, allowing for prolonged submerged operations and improved survivability while carrying nuclear-armed missiles. The transition from modified legacy designs to an indigenous nuclear-propelled platform showcases Pyongyang’s notable advancements in naval engineering and strategic planning, despite facing technical and economic challenges.
Kim reaffirmed that North Korea’s defense policy remains unchanged, warning that any threats to its strategic security will have consequences.
