Karnataka Maritime Board Launches Global Tender for Deepwater Port at Pavinakurve
Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has Started a Global Tender for a New Deepwater Port in Pavinakurve
The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has announced a global tender for developing a new deepwater port at Pavinakurve in Uttara Kannada. This project is a public-private partnership (PPP) aiming to build an all-weather port with a capacity to handle 14 million tonnes per year. The estimated cost of this development is ₹3,047.86 crore, according to Jayaram Raipura, the CEO of KMB.
The proposed port will be located in Honnavar taluk, by the banks of the Sharavathi and Badagani rivers, near the village of Pavinakurve. This area was chosen for its strategic location along the coastline.
Project Details Available Online
All tender documents related to the project are available for download on the Karnataka Public Procurement Portal. KMB has specified that 214 hectares of land will be required for this port. This land will be created using material dredged during the construction process, ensuring that no extra land is taken.
What Will the Port Handle?
The port is designed to handle a variety of goods. This includes:
- Iron ore
- Coal and coking coal
- Limestone and dolomite
- Green hydrogen and green ammonia
- Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
- Finished steel products

Modern Facilities for Big Ships
The new deepwater port will feature modern, eco-friendly equipment. It will include facilities for cape-sized vessels, which are very large ships that can carry up to 1,80,000 deadweight tons (DWT). These ships need deepwater to dock, and the port will have deep draft berthing to accommodate them. This means it will be able to handle large quantities of goods quickly and efficiently.
Important Dates for Interested Bidders
A pre-bid meeting is planned for December 10, 2024. This meeting will take place both in person at the KMB CEO’s office and online via videoconference. This hybrid format allows interested bidders from around the world to participate easily.
All bids must be submitted no later than January 9, 2025. The winning bidder will be chosen based on the highest royalty offered per metric tonne (MT) of cargo handled at the port.
Boosting Trade and Economy
This new port is expected to boost local and international trade. By handling a wide range of cargo, it will attract businesses involved in heavy industries, green energy, and bulk materials. The port’s location along the coast of Uttara Kannada makes it an ideal spot for shipping, which could increase economic activity in the region and beyond.
The Karnataka Maritime Board’s focus on eco-friendly technology also highlights its commitment to sustainable development. This port will not only boost the economy but will also follow green practices, making it a model for future port projects.
