Kolkata Port initiates berth mechanisation process
Mechanisation Project to Boost Cargo Handling Capacity at Haldia Dock Complex
The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), has taken a major step towards enhancing its dry bulk cargo handling efficiency by issuing a Letter of Intent (LoI) to Bothra Shipping Services Pvt. Ltd. This project, focused on the mechanisation of Berth No. 5 at the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), will be executed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate & Transfer (DBFOT) basis. With this initiative, HDC aims to solidify its role as a key gateway for maritime trade, especially in the handling of dry bulk cargoes like coal and limestone.
The project entails the installation of advanced equipment, including 1000 TPH rail-mounted Mobile Harbour Cranes, 2000 TPH conveyor systems, and mechanised Silo-based rapid wagon loading systems, along with supporting infrastructure over an area of 44 acres. The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹365.88 Cr, with a 30-month construction timeline followed by a 30-year concession period. Once completed, the berth will have a cargo handling capacity of 5 MMTPA, significantly boosting throughput and operational efficiency at the port.

This modernisation effort is expected to meet the rising demand for efficient cargo operations at HDC. The chairperson, Rathendra Raman, expressed optimism about the project, stating that the mechanisation will deliver long-term benefits by streamlining operations and enhancing the port’s overall capacity. He also acknowledged the contributions of key stakeholders, including Bothra Shipping Services and its consortium partners, in driving this critical expansion.
With the completion of this project, Haldia Dock Complex is poised to become one of India’s premier dry bulk cargo handling hubs, reinforcing its position in global maritime trade.
