Kongsberg Maritime Launches India’s First Electric Tug
Kongsberg Maritime has secured a groundbreaking contract to provide a fully integrated equipment package for India’s inaugural electric tug, a pivotal development in the nation’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). This project marks a significant milestone in India’s maritime decarbonisation efforts, showcasing the world’s first complete electrical tug integration. The tug, designed by NavNautik India, is set to operate at Deendayal Port in Gujarat, with delivery and commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Innovative Technology for Sustainable Maritime Operations
The contract, awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in collaboration with Ripley Group, encompasses a comprehensive suite of Kongsberg Maritime’s advanced technologies. This includes permanent magnet (PM) driven azimuth thrusters, cutting-edge electrical systems featuring energy storage solutions, and sophisticated automation and control systems. Additionally, Kongsberg will provide digital solutions such as Vessel Insight and Vessel Performance, ensuring seamless system integration.
Kongsberg Maritime’s Global Customer Support team in India will offer operational assistance, enhancing the reliability and lifecycle value for the tug’s owner and port operator. While the company has previously engaged in hybrid ‘e-tug’ projects, this contract represents its first venture into full-electric tug technology, underscoring its commitment to sustainable maritime innovation.
The electric tug will boast a 60-ton bollard pull, positioning it as a vital asset in India’s efforts to reduce emissions in the maritime sector. Annette Holte, Country Manager of Kongsberg Maritime India, expressed pride in this achievement, emphasizing the collaboration between global expertise and local industry to foster sustainable practices.
