Korea Line Corp. Launches Starlink Service Across Fleet
Korea Line Corp., the maritime division of SM Group, has made a significant advancement in maritime communication by successfully installing and activating SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service across its entire fleet of 38 vessels. This milestone, announced on January 16, marks Korea Line as the first company in South Korea’s shipping industry to implement this cutting-edge technology. The fleet includes various types of vessels, such as bulk carriers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers.
The initiative began with a service agreement signed in April 2022 with KT SAT, one of SpaceX’s official business-to-business resellers. By integrating Starlink’s high-performance satellite communications network, Korea Line aims to enhance the operational capabilities of its smart vessels. The Starlink system operates through a constellation of over 8,000 low-Earth-orbit satellites, positioned approximately 550 kilometers above the Earth. This proximity allows for significantly faster communication speeds compared to traditional geostationary satellites.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency and Crew Welfare
Korea Line anticipates that the introduction of Starlink will lead to improved efficiency in vessel operations. The service will facilitate quicker collection and transmission of operational data, enabling smoother real-time communication between vessels at sea and onshore offices. This enhancement is expected to streamline onboard operations, making them more effective and responsive.
In addition to operational improvements, the Starlink service is poised to bolster the welfare of crew members during long voyages. With the system now fully operational, seafarers will benefit from easier access to continuous communication with their families. This connectivity will also extend to remote medical services and online educational opportunities, significantly enhancing the quality of life for those working at sea.
