Korea, US open shipbuilding partnership center to advance MASGA initiative
In a significant move, South Korea and the United States have come together to establish a shipbuilding cooperation center in Washington. This initiative aims to support the planned $150 billion investment in the U.S. shipbuilding sector, a commitment made by Seoul under a bilateral trade and investment deal from the previous year.
New Chapter in Shipbuilding Industry
Senior officials and industry leaders from both countries recently gathered for the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center (KUSPC). This platform will drive forward the “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again (MASGA)” initiative, designed to revitalize America’s shipbuilding industry.
Two months prior to the launch, South Korea and the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish the center and enhance bilateral cooperation in shipbuilding. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan expressed strong support for President Trump’s maritime action plan and emphasized Korea’s commitment to working alongside the U.S. to strengthen the shipbuilding sector.
Commitment to MASGA Initiative
Highlighting the core of this initiative, Minister Kim described MASGA as a bold vision that aims to enhance American shipbuilding capabilities, maritime power, and support regional economies across the U.S. He emphasized Korea’s readiness to be a key partner in realizing this vision by investing in joint research, technology sharing, and skilled workforce development.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick echoed the importance of tangible outcomes from shipbuilding cooperation with South Korea. He stressed the need for actual ship production in America, emphasizing the removal of regulatory barriers to facilitate Korean investments in U.S. shipbuilding activities.
Promoting Bilateral Alliance
The launch event witnessed the presence of new U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel, who hailed the shipbuilding cooperation as an expansion of the bilateral alliance into a crucial area. She emphasized the significance of aligning industrial strategies to achieve common goals and foster a fair and resilient trade relationship between the two nations.
South Korea’s Ambassador to the U.S. Kang Kyung-wha termed the KUSPC launch as a major milestone, marking the beginning of a secure and trusted joint maritime industrial ecosystem. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration of South Korea pledged to explore opportunities for cooperation in naval shipbuilding and assist Korean companies in joining U.S. shipbuilding and defense supply chains.
In a display of mutual commitment, both countries signed several MOUs aimed at promoting shared growth, supply chain cooperation, workforce training, and joint technology development in the shipbuilding sector. This collaborative effort, under the banner of “Team Korea,” includes key players from both nations, signaling a new era of cooperation and growth in the shipbuilding industry.
