Karachi Port Achieves Record Cargo Milestone

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has concluded the fiscal year 2024-25 with remarkable achievements, handling a record 54 million tons of cargo and surpassing its previous container handling record by managing 2.65 million TEUs. This significant growth is attributed to the proactive leadership of Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and the Transition Management Committee, which has effectively capitalized on the surge in both imports and exports, thereby enhancing national trade and economic activity.

Breaking down the figures further, the port’s export cargo handling achieved a remarkable growth rate of 6.49%, totaling 20.02 million tons. Imports also showed strong performance, closing at 33.93 million tons, which represents a growth of 3.28% from the previous year. Specifically, dry cargo exports reached 18.91 million tons, up by 7.06% due to the efficient handling of commodities such as clinker, rice, and talc lumps. In contrast, dry cargo imports totaled 22.77 million tons, a slight increase of 0.81%, primarily driven by the handling of soybean and yellow peas.
Record Container Handling and Vessel Movement
The Karachi Port also set a new record in container handling, achieving 2.65 million TEUs during the fiscal year, a feat attributed to increased trade activities supported by favorable government policies. Additionally, vessel movement at the port saw an 11% increase, with a total of 1,943 vessels handled. This included 1,093 container ships, 218 bulk carriers, 180 general cargo ships, and 452 liquid bulk tankers.
These achievements underscore the Karachi Port’s pivotal role in facilitating trade and boosting the national economy, reflecting a robust response to the growing demands of both import and export sectors. The continued growth in cargo handling and vessel movement positions the Karachi Port as a vital hub for maritime trade in the region.
