Launch of MV New Mwanza: A New Era in African Maritime Transport
Dar es Salaam/Mwanza – On January 23, 2026, Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba inaugurated the MV New Mwanza, heralded as the largest freshwater passenger ship in Africa. This state-of-the-art vessel, designed for operations on Lake Victoria, represents a significant advancement in Tanzania’s maritime transport sector.
The MV New Mwanza spans 92.6 meters in length and 17 meters in width, with a total weight of 3,500 tonnes. It boasts a capacity to accommodate 1,200 passengers, transport 20 vehicles, and carry up to 400 tonnes of cargo. With a cruising speed of 16 knots (approximately 30 km/h), the ship reduces travel time between Mwanza and Bukoba to just six to seven hours, a notable improvement compared to the eight to ten hours required by existing vessels.
During the launch, Dr. Nchemba emphasized the importance of leveraging the skills acquired during the ship’s construction for future maritime projects. He urged the Ministry of Transport to ensure that these skills are utilized effectively. Additionally, he called on the Tanzania Shipping Company (Tashico) to collaborate with stakeholders to enhance passenger safety and maintain high operational standards, which he believes are crucial for fostering trade and regional relations.
