Legend of the Seas floats out at Meyer Turku shipyard

Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas Launched

In a significant milestone for the cruise industry, Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku has successfully floated out the Legend of the Seas, the third ship in the Icon-class series. This impressive vessel is set to be delivered to Royal Caribbean International in the summer of 2026. The float-out ceremony, held at the shipyard in Turku, featured traditional festivities, including speeches from key representatives and a ceremonial gun salute.

Celebrating Innovation and Collaboration

The float-out ceremony took place at the end of August and showcased the collaborative spirit between Meyer Turku and Royal Caribbean International. During the event, Casimir Lindholm, CEO of Meyer Turku, emphasized the importance of the Icon-class series in highlighting Finland’s maritime expertise. “Legend of the Seas continues the state-of-the-art Icon-class, which allows the Finnish maritime industry to showcase its unique expertise at its best,” Lindholm stated. He also noted that the shipyard, along with Royal Caribbean and its partners, is committed to advancing shipbuilding processes and concepts with each new vessel.

As part of the celebration, shipyard workers participated in a friendly competition to open the water valves of the construction basin, marking the momentous occasion with enthusiasm. The Legend of the Seas measures 365 meters in length and has a gross tonnage of approximately 248,000. Following the float-out, the ship has been moved to an outfitting dock for final touches before its scheduled delivery.

Future of Icon-Class Ships

The Legend of the Seas joins its sister ships, Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, in the Icon-class lineup. Icon of the Seas was delivered in 2024, while Star of the Seas was recently christened in July 2025 at Port Canaveral. Meyer Turku is currently constructing a fourth unnamed Icon-class ship, expected to be completed in 2027. Additionally, the shipbuilder has an agreement with Royal Caribbean that includes options for a fifth and sixth Icon-class ship, indicating a promising future for this innovative series.

The successful float-out of Legend of the Seas not only marks a significant achievement for Meyer Turku but also reinforces Royal Caribbean’s commitment to expanding its fleet with state-of-the-art vessels designed for modern cruising experiences.
