Liaoning Shipbuilding Industry Secures Record 44.8M DWT in New Orders in First Seven Months, Topping China
On August 19, the Information Office of the Liaoning Provincial Government disclosed significant achievements in the shipbuilding industry during the first seven months of this year. The province secured new orders totaling 44.799 million deadweight tons, ranking first in China.
Historic Breakthrough in Shipbuilding Industry
The value-added of Liaoning Province’s manufacturing sector for railway, shipbuilding, aerospace, and other transport equipment grew by 43.5% year-on-year in the first half of the year. Additionally, the output of civil steel ships surged 2.8-fold, solidifying the province’s position in the national top tier for core shipbuilding indicators. Liaoning Province also ranked second in completed shipbuilding tonnage and volume of orders on hand, with the volume of new orders securing the top spot in the country.
15th Five-Year Plan for Marine Economic Development
The “15th Five-Year Plan for Marine Economic Development in Liaoning Province” unveiled ambitions to establish a world-class manufacturing base for high-end ships and offshore engineering equipment. The plan aims to enhance mainstream vessel types while focusing on next-generation bulk carriers, ultra-large container ships, and ultra-large oil tankers. Emphasis will be placed on advancing design and construction capabilities for high-tech vessels like large-scale carriers for liquid ammonia, LNG, ethane, and CO2, LNG bunkering vessels, and offshore wind power deck transport vessels.
The province plans to create a cluster for high-end ships and offshore engineering equipment in areas such as Dalian Bay, Changxing Island, Lushunkou in Dalian, and Longgang in Huludao. Prioritizing high-end capabilities, green practices, and intelligent technologies, the initiative aims to establish a comprehensive industrial chain by 2030, with an industrial scale exceeding 150 billion yuan (approximately US$22.32 billion).
Wang Yi, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Liaoning Province, highlighted the province’s strong foundation in marine manufacturing. Key sectors such as shipbuilding and offshore engineering, along with coastal petrochemicals, are pivotal in supporting the industry’s growth. The province’s future plans include building a world-class shipbuilding and offshore engineering industry cluster in Dalian, with a focus on green and intelligent vessels, deep-sea equipment, and polar-region equipment.
