Lloyd’s Register grants AiP to SHI for innovative ammonia fuel container vessel

New Ammonia-Fueled Ship Design Brings Hope for Cleaner Oceans

Lloyd’s Register and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) are working together to design a new eco-friendly container ship that runs on ammonia, a cleaner fuel that doesn’t release carbon into the air. This project, known as a Joint Development Project (JDP), focuses on creating a large 9,300 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) container ship that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

This big announcement was made on September 19, 2024, at the Gastech event in Houston, USA. The goal of the project is to make shipping more sustainable by using ammonia as a fuel instead of traditional fossil fuels like diesel. Ammonia is seen as a good option because it doesn’t produce carbon dioxide when burned, helping fight against climate change.

How the Project Will Work SHI will work closely with Eastern Pacific Shipping to design the ammonia-fueled container ship. Lloyd’s Register, a global leader in ship safety and certification, will carefully review SHI’s designs and offer advice on improving them. This partnership will make sure the ship is built with the best, safest, and most efficient technology available.

There is an urgent need for cleaner fuel solutions in the maritime industry. Shipping produces a lot of carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming. This new ship design is part of the broader effort to cut down on pollution and make the oceans cleaner. By using ammonia, this ship will produce fewer harmful emissions, helping the industry move toward zero-carbon shipping.

Following Previous Projects This isn’t the first time SHI has worked on ammonia-fueled ships. Recently, they received another Approval in Principle (AiP) for a large ammonia carrier ship that uses fuel cells powered by hydrogen made from ammonia. This ship can store ammonia onboard and break it down to create hydrogen, a clean fuel source.

Why Ammonia? Ammonia is gaining popularity as a carbon-free fuel for the future. It has the potential to power ships without releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere. SHI’s Chief Technology Officer, Hae Ki Jang, said, “Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel for a future eco-friendly society. Through this project, SHI aims to become a leader in creating sustainable fuel solutions for ships.”

Partners agree continuation of landmark collaboration for ammonia dual-fuel container ship

Lloyd’s Register is also committed to helping shipping companies switch to cleaner fuels. Sung-Gu Park, President of Lloyd’s Register for North East Asia, explained that there’s a growing demand for ships with innovative, green technology. “Lloyd’s Register is at the forefront of designing and approving ammonia-fueled vessels, helping the maritime sector meet environmental standards and achieve zero carbon emissions.”

What Does This Mean for the Future of Shipping? The success of this project could lead to more ammonia-fueled ships in the future. If more shipping companies adopt this technology, it could dramatically reduce the amount of harmful emissions from the maritime industry. This is important because shipping is one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions in the world.

By working on new fuel solutions like ammonia, companies like SHI and Lloyd’s Register are helping pave the way for a cleaner, greener future for global shipping.
