Lloyd’s Register Grants Approval in Principle for Oshima’s Multi-Fuel-Ready Bulk Carrier

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for its innovative multi-fuel-ready Ultramax bulk carrier design. This significant milestone was celebrated at Oshima’s headquarters in Japan on January 23, 2026. The approval covers a 64,000 deadweight ton (dwt) bulk carrier concept that is designed to accommodate various future fuel pathways, including ammonia, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Additionally, the design includes provisions for onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS), reinforcing the industry’s shift towards lower and zero-carbon operations.
The AiP is crucial as it builds confidence among shipowners, financiers, and charterers regarding new design solutions. Oshima’s multi-fuel-ready approach allows shipowners to defer final fuel decisions, thereby protecting asset value and ensuring operational relevance throughout the vessel’s lifespan. This flexibility is increasingly important as the maritime industry faces uncertainties related to fuel options and evolving global regulations.
Comprehensive Review Ensures Safety and Feasibility
LR conducted an extensive technical review of Oshima’s design in line with its ShipRight Risk Based Certification framework. This rigorous assessment evaluated the safety, feasibility, and integration of the proposed fuel and carbon capture systems. The independent assurance provided by LR enables the concept to advance towards detailed design and potential construction.
Sung-Gu Park, North East Asia President at Lloyd’s Register, emphasized the importance of Oshima’s flexible approach. He stated, “The maritime industry is navigating a period of profound uncertainty as operators evaluate future fuel pathways, infrastructure development, and evolving global regulatory expectations.” Park highlighted that Oshima’s design offers a practical solution for shipowners as they strategize their decarbonization efforts.
Dr. Junichi Man, Managing Director of Oshima Shipbuilding, expressed gratitude for the approval, noting that the collaboration between Oshima’s engineering team and LR’s experts was instrumental in enhancing the concept. He remarked, “As future fuel options diversify and global regulations continue to evolve, flexibility is becoming increasingly important for shipowners.” The AiP not only strengthens the long-standing partnership between LR and Oshima Shipbuilding but also underscores the significance of early-stage assurance in accelerating the adoption of next-generation technologies in the maritime sector.
The approval of Oshima’s multi-fuel-ready bulk carrier design marks a pivotal step towards sustainable shipping solutions. As the industry continues to evolve, such innovations will play a crucial role in meeting future environmental standards and operational demands.
