LR announces partnership with SHI for floating production and storage system for green ammonia
Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have joined forces to create a new type of floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) system. This system will be designed specifically for producing green ammonia, which is a cleaner energy alternative.
What is the FPSO System?
The FPSO system is already popular in the oil and gas industry. It’s like a floating factory that extracts and processes fuel directly at sea. Now, LR and SHI want to use this same idea to produce green ammonia, which could become an important clean fuel. This project is one of the first times that an FPSO will be used for ammonia instead of oil or gas.
How Will the System Work?
The new FPSO will be powered by renewable energy sources, like wind farms out at sea. It will use this energy to split seawater into hydrogen through a process called electrolysis. Then, the hydrogen will be mixed with nitrogen to make green ammonia. This green ammonia can be transferred to special ships that carry it to where it’s needed.

A Big Step for Green Energy
The agreement between LR and SHI was signed during the Offshore Korea 2024 event. In this deal, Samsung Heavy Industries will handle the design of the FPSO, while Lloyd’s Register will review the plans and give technical advice to make the design even better. This project aims to connect with offshore wind farms in Europe, making it a key player in the future of green energy.
What the Experts Say
Sean van der Post, who leads Lloyd’s Register’s Offshore Business, is excited about the potential of green ammonia. He said, “The green ammonia market is set to grow fast in the coming years, especially as a clean fuel for the shipping industry. We are eager to work with SHI to meet this demand.”
Hae-Ki Jang, Chief Technology Officer at Samsung Heavy Industries, also expressed his enthusiasm. He stated, “We are pleased to collaborate with Lloyd’s Register. This project is a major step towards our goal of reaching net-zero and advancing green energy technology.”
Why is Ammonia Important?
Lloyd’s Register is already a leader in using ammonia as a fuel, especially in large container ships. They have been providing guidance to companies that want to switch to ammonia fuel through their “Fuel for Thought” reports. LR’s services cover safety tests, risk assessments, and approvals for new ship designs. They are working to make sure that using ammonia as a fuel is safe and reliable.
By focusing on green ammonia, LR and SHI are taking a bold step toward cleaner energy for the future. Their goal is to make ammonia a safe and effective fuel, not just for shipping but for other industries as well. This partnership could pave the way for more sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
