HD Hyundai and Maersk Unite for Green Shipping

In a significant move towards sustainable shipping, South Korea’s leading shipbuilding firm, HD Hyundai, has partnered with A.P. Moller-Maersk to develop decarbonised shipping technologies and enhance global logistics services. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed at HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, during a ceremony attended by prominent executives from both companies.

Strategic Collaboration for Decarbonisation

The newly established partnership aims to leverage HD Hyundai’s advanced ship decarbonisation technologies to reduce carbon emissions across Maersk’s fleet. In return, HD Hyundai will integrate Maersk’s comprehensive logistics services into its operations, enhancing efficiency across its subsidiaries. This collaboration is poised to set a new standard in the shipping industry, focusing on sustainability and operational excellence.

As part of the agreement, HD Hyundai will deliver new vessels equipped with cutting-edge navigation solutions, including Hinas, developed by its subsidiary Avikus. Additionally, the ships will feature Oceanwise, an AI-driven solution designed to optimize decarbonisation and economic operations. The partnership also includes plans to improve engine efficiency, boost cargo capacity on container ships, and retrofit dual-fuel propulsion systems. Furthermore, both companies will explore the feasibility of implementing a solid oxide fuel cell system through HD Hyundai’s newly formed subsidiary, HD Hydrogen.

Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with HD Hyundai has been built over decades, founded on mutual trust and respect. This MOU marks an important milestone, reinforcing the strong relationship we have developed and paving the way for even greater collaboration in the future.” This initiative not only highlights the commitment of both companies to environmental sustainability but also positions them as leaders in the transition to greener shipping practices.
