MAN Energy Solutions and Bonatti to Collaborate on EDF PEI Bioenergy Plant
New Corsican 130 MW Power Plant to Run on 100% Liquid Biomass Fuel by 2028
A new 130 MW power plant will be built in Corsica, using advanced engines designed to run entirely on liquid biomass fuel made from plant-based sources. This innovative project, led by MAN Energy Solutions and construction specialist Bonatti, will replace the old Le Vazzio power plant near Ajaccio by late 2027 or early 2028. The new Ricanto power plant aims to reduce carbon emissions and ensure a steady energy supply for Corsica’s power grid.
A Green Energy Milestone for Corsica
The new plant will feature eight MAN 18V51/60 engines, known for their high efficiency and ability to run on liquid biomass. With a total capacity of 130 MW, it will provide reliable energy while helping to minimize the island’s environmental impact. The engines are designed to run smoothly on renewable fuels, helping Corsica move toward a greener future.
Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Energy Solutions, emphasized the importance of the project during the contract-signing ceremony on September 6, 2024. He said, “This power plant will play a key role in ensuring Corsica’s energy security while greatly lowering CO2 emissions.”
Long-Term Maintenance for Sustainability
The plant’s maintenance will be handled by MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales division of MAN Energy Solutions. A 25-year service agreement includes spare parts, regular maintenance, technical support, and training for personnel at EDF PEI, the power company operating the plant. This long-term partnership ensures the plant will continue to perform efficiently for decades.
Replacing Aging Infrastructure
The Ricanto power plant will replace the aging Le Vazzio facility, which has served Corsica for many years. With the shift to biomass fuel, Corsica is taking a big step toward reducing its carbon footprint. The island’s reliance on cleaner energy sources demonstrates a commitment to sustainability while maintaining reliable power for residents and businesses.
Conclusion
The new Ricanto power plant in Corsica is an important step in reducing the island’s carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. By using engines optimized for 100% liquid biomass, the plant will provide clean, reliable power for years to come. Partnerships like the one between MAN Energy Solutions, Bonatti, and EDF PEI highlight the growing global focus on sustainable energy solutions.
