MAN Energy Solutions and H-TEC SYSTEMS in cooperation with Helen Oy to execute Helsinki Hydrogen Plant

Finland's Helen Oy Partners with MAN Energy Solutions for Green Hydrogen Production

Helen Oy, a major energy company in Finland, has embarked on a pioneering project to produce green hydrogen in collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions and H-TEC SYSTEMS. This venture marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in Helsinki.

The project, named 3H2, will establish a 3-megawatt plant near Helsinki’s district heating network and Vuosaari Harbour. This plant, equipped with three cutting-edge PEM electrolyzers from H-TEC SYSTEMS, aims to produce up to 1,350 kilograms of green hydrogen daily. This hydrogen will be generated using electricity from Helen’s renewable energy sources, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

MAN Energy Solutions, renowned for its expertise in industrial solutions, will oversee the hydrogen section’s engineering, procurement, and construction. This partnership underscores the critical role of collaboration in advancing hydrogen technology and meeting future energy demands sustainably.

Sari Mannonen, Senior Vice President of New Business & Hydrogen at Helen Oy, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s multidimensional approach. She emphasized the integration of electricity, heating, transportation, and hydrogen sectors, highlighting its potential to enhance energy system flexibility.

H-TEC SYSTEMS, a leader in PEM electrolysis technology, will supply its advanced ME450 electrolyzers, optimized for efficient hydrogen production from fluctuating renewable energy sources like wind and solar. This technology not only produces high-purity hydrogen suitable for various applications but also utilizes waste heat to support Helen’s district heating network.

Alexander Stöckler, from MAN Energy Solutions, stressed the importance of industrial-scale hydrogen production for achieving economies of scale and meeting global demand efficiently. He emphasized the pivotal role of energy suppliers like Helen Oy in driving sustainable practices and operational excellence in hydrogen technology.
