Marine Ministry inaugurates ACTU to tackle corruption
New Unit Launched to Combat Corruption
The Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (MM&BE) has taken a significant step towards promoting transparency and fighting corruption. Over the weekend, the ministry inaugurated its Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU). This initiative aims to create a more accountable environment within the ministry and its associated agencies. The event took place at the ministry’s headquarters and marked a pivotal moment in the government’s ongoing battle against corruption.
Inauguration Ceremony Highlights
The inauguration ceremony was a formal affair, featuring the administration of the Oath of Allegiance to the newly appointed ACTU members. This important task was carried out by Nkem Ezenwa, the Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit at the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The presence of such a high-ranking official underscored the significance of the event and the commitment to anti-corruption efforts.
During his speech, Oloruntola Olufemi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized the need for a zero-tolerance approach toward corruption. He urged ACTU members to maintain integrity and diligence in their roles. “Shun any malpractice act that would compromise the integrity of your office in the course of this task assigned to you,” Olufemi stated. His words served as a reminder that the fight against corruption begins with the individuals tasked with upholding ethical standards.
Furthermore, Olufemi highlighted that transparency should start with the unit members themselves. He encouraged them to lead by example and uphold the trust placed in them by the ministry and the public. The commitment to integrity was echoed by Olusegun Adigun, the Acting Director of the System Study and Review Department at ICPC, who praised the establishment of the ACTU as a vital mechanism for curbing corruption within Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

ACTU’s Role and Responsibilities
The newly formed ACTU is expected to play a crucial role in promoting ethical practices within the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. According to Olusegun Adigun, the unit will focus on several key responsibilities. These include periodic sensitization of staff on corruption issues, developing and reviewing ethical guidelines for employees, and ensuring compliance with established standards.
Adigun presented the ACTU operational manual to the Permanent Secretary, which will serve as a guide for the unit’s activities. This manual outlines the procedures and protocols that the ACTU will follow to effectively combat corruption. The establishment of the unit aligns with the Federal Government’s broader anti-corruption agenda, reinforcing the ministry’s commitment to accountability and transparency in its operations.
In his inaugural address, Oliver Chukwu, the Chairman of the MM&BE ACTU, pledged the unit’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity. He assured attendees that the team would work tirelessly to foster a corruption-free environment within the ministry. The establishment of the ACTU marks a significant milestone in the ministry’s efforts to enhance transparency and accountability, setting a precedent for other government agencies to follow.
