Maritime Protection Secures Record €22.7m Contract For Inert
Maritime Protection Secures €22.7M LNG Contract

Maritime Protection, a division of Survitec specializing in inert gas systems, has landed a landmark contract worth €22.7 million. The deal involves supplying dry inert gas systems for 24 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers currently under construction at a prominent shipyard in China. This initiative is part of Qatar’s ambitious second LNG fleet expansion program, aimed at addressing the surging global demand for liquefied natural gas.
Significant Milestone for Maritime Protection
This contract marks the largest single order in Maritime Protection’s history, showcasing the company’s capability to deliver high-capacity dry inert gas generators rated at 21,000 Nm³/h. The systems will be delivered in phases from 2026 to 2030, coinciding with the completion schedules of the vessels. The 24 LNG carriers are being built for a consortium of five shipowners, reflecting a collaborative effort to meet the increasing international demand for LNG amid evolving energy supply dynamics.
Bernt Øhrn, Managing Director at Maritime Protection, emphasized the importance of this contract, stating, “It’s the largest single order in our history and reflects the growing demand for engineered safety systems in the LNG sector.” The contract was awarded after a rigorous evaluation process, highlighting Maritime Protection’s expertise in providing complex safety solutions for advanced commercial vessels. The decision was influenced by the maturity of the system design and the long-term operational reliability offered by the company.

Advanced Safety Solutions for LNG Carriers
Inert gas systems are critical safety components on LNG carriers, ensuring safe cargo operations by maintaining an oxygen level of approximately 1% in cargo tanks to prevent explosions and fires. Each system comprises a combustion chamber, chiller unit, cooler, and dryer, designed to eliminate the risk of hydrocarbons in the ship’s drainage system. Furthermore, these systems comply with the approval standards of major classification societies, including DNV, BV, ABS, and Lloyd’s Register, as required by vessel operators.
Knut Kaupang, Director of Sales at Maritime Protection, noted that the shipowners prioritized securing a technically mature solution from a reliable supplier during the quotation process. He stated, “Our system design has been proven across a wide range of vessel types and operating conditions, which has helped build confidence among all stakeholders involved.” This contract significantly boosts Maritime Protection’s order book, bringing the total number of gas tankers equipped with their inert gas generators to over 400 since 2005, with more than half commissioned in the last five years.
