Maritime technology reforms set stage for jobs
In a bid to strengthen the shipping sector and enhance the country’s blue economy, Tanzania is prioritizing maritime technology and skills development. Deputy Minister for Transport, Mr. David Kihenzile, emphasized the importance of building a skilled workforce capable of operating modern systems to improve safety and efficiency across the sector during the national climax of the 2026 World Maritime Day celebrations in Tanga.
Investing in Technology for the Future
Mr. Kihenzile highlighted the need for investment in technology to prepare Tanzanian youth for emerging job opportunities in the maritime industry. He emphasized that modern technology offers the chance to build the capacity of the youth, enabling them to secure employment and keep pace with the digital world’s evolution.
Building Capacity and Strengthening Collaboration
The government’s continued investment in port development, maritime safety, and shipbuilding capacity, including vessels for search and rescue operations, aims to ensure compliance with international safety standards. Mr. Kihenzile also called for stronger collaboration with the private sector to enhance the industry’s resilience against weather-related disruptions and operational challenges.
Growth in Certified Seafarers
The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) reported a significant increase in the number of certified seafarers, issuing 15,948 seafarers’ certificates by March this year. This represents a 55.29% increase from the corresponding period in the previous financial year. Professional certification not only opens up employment opportunities but also enhances the country’s participation in the domestic and international maritime labor markets.
