Massive explosion on container vessel MSC CAPETOWN III

A blast occurred inside vessel MV. MSC CAPETOWN III on 11 August 2024. All the operations staff and other supporting crews were evacuated. The blast happened at the Colombo port, Srilanka.

From the video, smoke and fire are seen to be willowing from her cargo hold. There is no report on casualty yet.

The vessel arrived at Jaya container terminal on 10 August and berthed at birth 4MS. Our team tried to contact the Srilanka Port Authority; however, unable to connect properly and have a definite response to this subject.

MSC CAPETOWN III (IMO: 9311737) is a Container Ship and is sailing under the flag of Portugal. Her length overall (LOA) is 222.16 meters and her width is 30.07 meters.

This week, merely two days ago, on 9 August 2024, an explosion occurred on the box ship YM Mobility at a container terminal in the Beilun Port area of ​​Zhoushan Port.

The YM Mobility is a Liberia-flagged, 2011-built containership owned by Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming. It has a container capacity of 6,589 teu.
