Master Boat Builders Secures Key Navy Contract
Master Boat Builders, Inc. has officially signed a contract with Austal USA to produce modules for the U.S. Navy’s Navajo-class Towing, Salvage, and Rescue Ship (T-ATS) program. This agreement marks a significant step for Master Boat as it enhances its role in government defense shipbuilding, contributing to the Navy’s efforts to bolster domestic shipbuilding capabilities. The collaboration aims to deliver advanced vessels designed for various missions, including towing and humanitarian assistance.
Strengthening Domestic Shipbuilding
The partnership between Master Boat Builders and Austal USA represents a pivotal moment for both companies, particularly for Master Boat as it expands its involvement in defense projects. Under the terms of the contract, Master Boat will fabricate two T-ATS hull modules at its facility in Coden, Alabama, located just 30 minutes from Austal USA’s Mobile shipyard. This strategic location allows for efficient collaboration and transportation of the modules for final assembly and outfitting.
Garrett Rice, President of Master Boat Builders, emphasized the importance of this contract, stating, “This contract is a direct result of the partnership we built with Austal USA last year, and it validates what we’ve been saying all along – regional shipyards like ours can take on complex defense work and deliver.” He noted that the company is not competing with larger shipyards but rather adding necessary capacity to meet the Navy’s demands. The agreement also highlights Master Boat’s commitment to workforce development, as the company continues to invest in training the next generation of shipbuilders in the Gulf Coast region.
The T-ATS program aims to replace aging fleet vessels with modern, multi-mission platforms capable of conducting a variety of operations, including towing disabled ships and providing disaster response. Austal USA has already made progress by launching the first two ships in the program, showcasing the ongoing commitment to enhancing naval capabilities. Master Boat’s involvement not only supports the Navy’s objectives but also strengthens the overall maritime industrial base in the United States.
Investment in Future Capabilities
In addition to the contract with Austal USA, Master Boat Builders is investing in a new $60 million manufacturing facility dedicated to government and defense shipbuilding. This state-of-the-art facility will be built directly across Bayou Coden from the existing yard and will feature advanced assembly capabilities for producing steel and aluminum ships. The new facility is expected to create approximately 200 additional jobs, further boosting the local economy and enhancing regional shipbuilding capacity.
As Master Boat Builders embarks on this new chapter, the company remains focused on delivering high-quality vessels that meet the stringent requirements of the U.S. Navy. The collaboration with Austal USA not only exemplifies the potential of regional shipyards but also aligns with the Navy’s vision for a diversified and resilient domestic shipbuilding industry. With ongoing investments and a commitment to workforce development, Master Boat Builders is poised to play a crucial role in the future of naval shipbuilding.
