Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), a prominent Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU), has taken a significant step in enhancing the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). On April 26, 2024, MDL commenced production activities for a new training ship specifically designed for the ICG. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen maritime training and operational readiness within the Coast Guard. The keel-laying ceremony, a pivotal moment in the ship’s construction, took place on January 13, 2025, at MDL’s Nhava Yard. The vessel will be powered by two diesel engines, enabling it to achieve speeds exceeding 20 knots. It is designed to accommodate a total of 223 personnel, including 70 trainee officers and 46 training staff. This capacity ensures that the ship can effectively serve its primary function as a training platform.
The ship will be classified under a dual class system, adhering to the standards set by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
